Another feeding problem

pezpunk Dec 09, 2005 07:50 PM

Great here we go again. Well my Dumeril is a bipolar feeder. When she eats she is ravenous and instantly takes the prey and will eat 2-3 rats in a meal. When I first got her she had lots of issues with eating, especially when I switched to rats. She's been on rats since summer and never really has had an issue until now. I haven't been able to get her to eat in well over a month and I know its not because she has a shed coming on. Nothing has changed in her set up and all temps seem to be right. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Well, I'd slow down! Of course, I don't know the size of the 2-3 rats being fed per feeding in comparison to your snake, but this alone sounds a bit too much. Some feed several SMALL prey items that equal one LARGE prey item, and that might be the case. However, if your maxing her out everytime she will feed, I'm not surprised at all that she's gone off feed. Dumerils simply do not power feed like common boas do. I'd try a bit more moderate feeding regimen and see if you can get a more consistent feeding behavior taking that route. I have a lot of Dumerils, and some of them simply feed when they want to, and there hasn't been a thing I've been able to do about it. This may very well be the case with your Dumerils. I'd just keep an eye on her, if she appears healthy and husbandry is in order, I wouldn't worry about the periods of fasting, just consider it a small savings in food bills-LOL! Take care!
