triplets!

bobclark Jul 23, 2003 05:35 PM

I usually have several sets of twins of various species during the course of a season but today, for the first time I had three snakes in one egg. Two of the babies were dead and one of these was fairly badly decomposed. The third hatched on his own and seems normal but is very small.

Awwwww......you have to keep him. Just because he's a fighter, and so cute! I've never heard of triplets before, ever.

Name him Hank. My reason for this is Hank Williams Jr. fell off a cliff when he was younger and he actually split his head open and his brain fell out, his dad pushed his brain back in and wraped his head in his shirt and took him to the hospital and he survived!

Another name would be Wilbur, because the little piggy was a runt and was almost killed bacause of it and survived to be a big healthy happy pig.

If it was female I have 100 other names, but those just poped up in my head.

That's such an interesting photo! It must be a tiny little baby!

jyohe Jul 23, 2003 05:46 PM

wow...that is odd....

............beats my best.......one egg.....2 snakes...3 heads....(Elaphe obsoleta o.)

the onlt time I ever had triplets you could tell it was actually 3 eggs fused together....(corn)...

,,,,,,,,,so......Bob?....how many eggs do you get in a year...???

Thanx...........JYReptiles

bobclark Jul 23, 2003 05:51 PM

Lots of eggs but never triplets. This was from a breeding of an albino male to a het female. No albinos from 5 eggs.

Not to correct you, as camera's can be deceiving with color... But the 'healthier' of the 2 dead snakes, looks a little lighter, plus do you think the genetics involved could have caused the 'freak occurrence'?

bobclark Jul 23, 2003 07:59 PM

The babies all look a little odd but I don't think there is a genetic reason for it. Many times runts or snakes that hatch from troubled eggs have a different color or pattern.

gardenia Jul 24, 2003 12:56 AM

Bob,

What do you mean by "troubled eggs?" I have my first clutch incubating right now and they seem to have a lot of calcium deposits. Would they fit in the catagory?

sad to hear that two out of three didn't make it, hope the surviving one thrives.

I thought I was going to see 3 healthy triplets but instead I see a scene out of a snake horror movie.

That's awful.

While I was hoping to see three heads popping out of an egg and see three healthy baby balls, it's still interesting to see just what were the results of this were. That's the reality of life. Life isn't always perfect like we would like it to be. While I was disappointed to see the end results, I still found it interesting to see. Thanks for posting Bob. Take care, Scott Sullivan.

If you work with breeding snakes long, odds are you are eventually going to see something not so pretty. At least I know I have on several occasions.

My site has a very ugly photo of two deformed albinos I produced (or rather failed to produce, they where dead) this year. I warn people on the link and don't include that page in the normal tab trough that area of my site. I understand if many don't want to see it (really wish it didn't happen for me to see) but felt in my case there may be lessons to learn and the picture might be helpful in the discussion on how to avoid more like them.

I'm glad Bob shared his pic as I had no idea a baby could survive the death of another that early in the same egg.

I had twin ball pythons in the low 30 gram range do just fine so hopefully his little one will too but I wonder if it isn't maybe even in the 20 gram range.
