This story was first reported after the tsunami hit in the Indian Ocean almost a year ago.

According to snopes www.snopes.com/photos/animals/hippo.asp the story is true. There is some disagreement on how the hippo became separated from its parents, and on how quickly the tort and hippo bonded. I'm guessing by now the hippo is too big to be around the tortoise.
