Need recommendation: good herp ID book for Panama

gretzkyrh4 Dec 10, 2005 03:11 PM

Now that another semester is behind me, I beginning to prepare for a two week excursion to Panama and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a good central american herp ID book. I will basically be covering the majority of the country from coast to coast and rainforest to mountains during my trip and hope to encounter a variety of herps. It is my first trip to the Panama, so my herp knowledge of the region is limited.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Chris

Chris,

A couple of books can be helpful -

Gunther Kohler's Reptiles of Central America - available at Amazon.com

Ibanez, et al. The Amphibians of Barro Colorado National Monument, Soberania National Park, and Adjacent Areas
They also have a CD to frog calls to go along with this book. I bought both of these at the bookstore of the Gamboa Rainforest Resort in Panama.

A Costa Rica guide will have some of the species as well.

Have a great trip. It is a beautiful country and not full of tourists!
