Gecko ID needed-Tarentola or Pachydactylus?

chaoscat Dec 10, 2005 04:51 PM

I picked up this gecko and one that looks like P. bibroni earlier today and was told they were "crocodile" geckos. Any ideas what this one could be? I've searched every image of Pachydactylus & Tarentola and can't seem to find a match.

How does one tell turneri from bibroni?

Bibroni is isolated to the southern most parts of South Africa. It is illegal to export them and they don't have the commerical value to risk illegal export. Turneri is found through a number of countries and its range overlaps bibroni. It looks very similar and is usually advertised as bibroni. A lot of people are adopting the correct name now but most of the pics online that are titled bibroni are really turneri which make ID difficult. I don't think you will find any bibroni in commercial trade except for possible hybrids that were imported before the ban. It is also possible bibroni and turneri are subspecies but I haven't spent much time studying this.

Turneri has broken bands across the back. Bibroni has similar bands but they are solid, unbroken. The best way I can describe it is that bibroni looks like it has solid black pairs of U's down the back. Turneri looks like it has jumbled, jagged stripes.

Sorry I couldn't be more help but if anyone else has some more insight on this, please feel free to respond. Every since I sold my last group I have neglected the history of these species.
