Baby chondros are VERY fragile. They have very delicate spines and should NOT be handled until they are yearlings. It would be very easy to injure their spine and you wouldn't even know it until later on when it develops spinal kinks. Sorry, I know its not what you wanted to hear. Hope this helps, Joe

As far as the moss, I would change it every month or two depending on how well it holds up against mold or mildew. I've never used it as substrate, but I know it's used regularly in nest boxes and lasts thru the incubation period. Since chondros (babies excepted) don't poop as much as some species, cleaning is a lot easier. That said, my little baby poops ALOT!

Thanks for the help, it is greatly appreciated! It just sucks that i cant hold him for a whole year. He is already nippy cant wait to see how he is in a year from now, but i do understand why not to and of course it is definitly worth it.

Most babies are nippy at this age (which is actually a good thing when you want them feeding). They settle down as they get older. If you're going to have a tame one, it will be tame for the most part. From what I've read and seen, they either are, or they aren't. They don't really tame down with handling like most species. Of course, these snakes aren't usually handled as much. They are more of an "ornamental" type. That said, my yearling is very tame and my little baby seems to be relatively mellow. I take it out on the perch for pictures, and it will crawl onto my hand. I usually don't do too much with it, mainly just take the pictures, weigh it, and take a picture next to an object for measuring it. I have a nice program that I use for that.My yearling I'll take out at least once a week, sometimes more. She seems to enjoy being out to see the world. I even trust her with children she's so laid back. They love her colors and soft skin.

Well i guess all i can do is hope my snake will be tame, but your are right these snakes are not meant to be handled much. They are such beautiful creatures though. And you are right about their skin, it is amazing feeling!

Every snake is an individual so you just have to see what the personality of the snake is like. My Sorong is so mellow she would put a cornsnake to shame. She really seems to like being out and will actually resist going back in the viv when you've had her out, especially outdoors. Maybe you'll be as lucky as I have been and get a real sweet one like she is.
