Breeding questions for Sonoran Gopher Snakes

jimburke27 Dec 10, 2005 09:28 PM

Hello. I have an adult Female Sonoran Gopher Snake and my Friend has an adult Male. I want to breed these together for 2006. I just turned off the heat for my Female and she is currently being kept at my room temperature of 61 degrees. I have some questions.

1) Do both prospective parents need to be hibernated for sucessful reproduction?

2) What are the ideal temperatures for hibernating these two Sonoran Gophers?

3) How long do they need to be hibernated to ensure fertility?

4) I already have experience in breeding Corn Snakes. Are there any key differences in breeding Sonoran Gophers vs. Corn Snakes?

5) Is there anything else I should know about breeding Sonoran Gopher Snakes?

Any helpful information would be much appreciated!

I brumate my Gophers in the same room as my Corns. The coldest it gets is about 50 and the majority of the time it is closer to 60. I let them cool for about 3 months. I think most feel that cooling both snakes is the way to go but others have good results without cooling at all. I think your temps in the low 60s would most likely be fine, it may help to keep them in the dark as well. Tom Stevens
