sick sinai agama update

dalamarss Dec 10, 2005 09:57 PM

For those of you who have suffered through my sick sinai agama story.....

He is better. I am still having to hand feed him baby food & pedialyte/distilled water. He is still on his lasix and antibiotics. But he has eaten small amounts of dried flies for the last two days (they are small enough for me to drop in his mouth). If he continues to improve I am going to try some of the dried crickets. He chased a cricket but isn't quick enough to catch them yet. He is moving about more and has started to bask again on his rock. His abdomen is still swollen but his eyes are open and he is trying to fight when I hand feed him. His energy level is much better although not 100% yet. He is still dehydrated (skin turgor is still poor) but it is improved from two weeks ago. A big thanks to all of you who posted ideas and encouragement! We may beat this yet...although I will have a lizard on Lasix forever....

Ditto what Eve said. I was wondering how he was doin' myself. Sounds like he's gonna pull through.

It's really good of Eve to talk you through your dilemma with your Sinai agama. I agree totally with each of her helpful posts on this matter. I also work with L s brachydactyla and believe me when I say that they just wont eat preserved insects (out of a can). This includes my breeding pairs, yearlings and the herds of juveniles produced these past seasons. So, let me suggest a 'trick of the trade' to you as far as trying to entice your clown agama into a slow/easy chase. Simply take a live healthy cricket and pull off one hind leg and place it near the lizard while basking. If your agama is hungry enough it will go after and catch a slow moving 'handicapped' cricket with little effort. If it still can't catch the insect ... merely pull off the other hind leg. If it catches and eats the first, simply offer one more but only one at a time. If the agama stops eating this likely means it's full for the moment. Try doing this once or twice a day. If he/she only eats one then you're that much more ahead of the game. If it only eats one every day or two that's ok too. It takes a while for a recouping lizard in therapy to gain all it's strength and appetite back.

John, I musta been sittin' on my brains. Certainly live would be better than canned, AND more nutritious. Even a recouperating lizard should like something a little more active .

I'll have to try that suggestion with the crickets. I honestly had never thought about handicapping a cricket! My problem with him eating live food is his lack of energy (movement)and not having the energy to chew (until just a day or so ago). And I usually have totally ticked him off by the time I get his meds and fluids down him
But I think I will try that tonight and see how it goes. I can always supplement what he eats if I need to.
