continued shell rot care

burunx Jul 23, 2003 06:21 PM

Hi,

I have begun treating my 2 babies for shell rot with betadine, keeping them in a warm/dry place, and adding extra Rept-Cal to their meals.

Couple of questions though:
1. Can I add a natural food source that will add Vit. D (I heard that this helps w/shell rot as well)

2. I thought the set up I had for them was good, but it must not be if they have shell rot. Could someone take a peek at my set up in the photo gallery and tell me what they think? They are under the heading of-Chelonians and are now on the second page under by name-BuRunx and have the titles-Inside view-Screen open-90 liter rubbermaid(this pic shows the Vita-Lite which is full spectrum and on 12 hours a day. the basking light is now closer to them and is on all the time. i also put them in sunlight a few times a week while they eat).

Thank you!!!

I cant say for possitive as I am not a vet or anything of the sort. But I was told that hatchlings wont get shell rot and I know from experience that many have it for a while then it goes away with the first few sheds. I have one that has something like that now and it looks way different than the shell rot I have seen. Your set up seems good and I don't see anything that needs changed in it. If you continue the betadine treatments let me know how it works? I havent done anything to the one I have now and it isnt getting any worse and does in fact seem to be a touch better after 2 weeks of having it here. Good luck and Happy turtle keeping!!
