Breeding size & age

l0co Dec 11, 2005 08:39 AM

In all the caresheets ive read about cornsnakes not a single one touched the subject of propper and safe breeding sizes and ages

im asking this because ive heared of this situation called eggbound (might be mistaken) - when a female is big enough to get pregnant but not enough to lay her eggs and thus die :<

what is the safe age and size of cornsnakes to breed?

What I meant to say was age doesn't matter, size does. I let my females get to 36" before breeding. Males can be smaller, 24-28".

I have seen more instances of older females getting eggbound than young ones. I think the reason for this is poor muscle tone (overweight females).

Sorry that first post didn't turn out, I previewed it and it looked OK.

The photo is of my het creamsicle with her clutch of 30 eggs from this past summer.

I count about 30 eggs.... great clutch! What was the fertility rate? Looks like they were all good at the time they were laid.

Although I personally have little experince with breeding I would never allow a corn snake under three feet breed . Only healthy snakes of good weight and size should be bred . I am sure someone with more experince can answer your question better , but there is lots on information on the internet on this subject . Good Luck .

I was told to never breed a snake under 2 years of age. It will stunt their growth. I believe that even if they are over 2-3, if they are small in size, it is not wise. You have to think that they have to make it through brumation safely. It is not just age, it is size as well.

Most of the breeders I've asked say three years/three hundred grams/three feet long as the general rule.

LOL! Yeah, I'd say you're good to go on that one. Lots of little snakes!
