Spotted Python Tail Injury

yvon Dec 11, 2005 09:29 AM

My 7 month old spotted python just shed and this is what his tail now looks like. He has a Visionarium tank with a 20W exposed light bulb, could he have burned himself? I was handling him when I noticed the injury. His lower abdomen also appears to be injured (very flat and appears to swell sometimes and clear fluid comes out of his anal opening regularly, looks like water).

What is the best treatment from here? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I took him to the vet. This is not "just a bad shed" this is necrosis of the tail. It the necrosis creeps up past the anal vent, then the snake is doomed. I'm applying burn victim cream morning and night.

Apparently he burned himself on the 20W lamp recommanded by Visionarium... Must have wrapped himself around it and gone through a slow cooking process.

Hopefully he'll make it. He'll simply have a shorter tail.
