planting question

redmoon Dec 11, 2005 12:45 PM

What kind of soil should I use in a vivarium for dart frogs? I'm doing a layer of LECA, with that anti-weed cloth on top of it, then a layer of moss, and i'm going to sink pots down into the LECA, with holes cut out in the cloth, to let them through. Or should I just go with a completely hydroponic theme? I have a peace lily, a couple bromeliads, phyllodendron, pothos, and english hedera ivy to put in this vivarium. Dunno if those would grow hydroponically.

thanks,
Ron Nocera

You should use dirt mixed with peat moss, sand and some oak leafs. you should also use a false bottom and NOT leca as it's too heavy and won't allow for as much air to contact the grown through roots compared to a false bottom will.

besure your soil isn't filled with worm casting, animal waste products or wood chips. you want the nitrogen cycle to start which will help your plants and mosses grow. let me know if i can help.
