Turkey Legs ???

demetrius Dec 11, 2005 02:51 PM

I have no plans on trying this but was just wondering what you guys think. I know a person who feeds his larger boids turkey legs from the supermarket supplemented with vitamins and calcium. So far he has had success doing so and his snakes are in great shape . I have heard that feeding poultry tends to cause loose stools in snakes but what other negative affects are there to doing this.Personally I think I will stick to feeding my larger snakes rats , rabbits and the odd guinea pig or two but I would love to hear your opinion on feeding snakes Turkey Legs . Thank You .

Just to make myself clear, I have no intention on trying this , just wanted to hear your opinion . Thank You .

I stick to mostly chicken legs though, I imagine that Turkey legs would work as well. I don't do it all the time, but once in awhile I do.

Is Kingsnake become so bad that you have to practically apologize for asking a question.....don't worry too much about the negative comments posted here. Relax and don't be afraid to try things, just do as much research as you can.

Good luck
Bob

You could also get small chickens and feed have better results. I think with chicken legs you are risking getting the animals some salmonella. I do not know about anyone else but I would not like to get animals that had more risk of Salmonella.
I talk to a buddy that happends to be a Vet. and the same thing that is happening with red ear slidrs turtles, may happend to animal fed chicken parts. Just my opinion.

Your right. You would definitely be putting your boas at risk for Salmonella. Now I've heard that almost all reptiles carry salmonella. I don't know if that is true or not. But I would hate to expose a healthy boa to salmonella if it did not carry it. I guess you can have a fecal test done by a vet and if your snake is already carrying salmonella then I would say go ahead and feed it poultry.

All animals are capable hosts for salmonella under the right circumstances....but not all reptiles carry salmonella.

The problem is, if you breed your animals would you want to get some of those animals for your collection, I would NOT want that.
But again if you do its your snimal, just make sure to state that before selling that animal, so the person getting it knows what they getting into.

Sorry Joel,

But you are being a bit ridiculous. Please don't take this personally, but that was a silly statement. Don't get me wrong it is your right to buy from whoever you want and you can put restrictions on those that feed chicken/turkey parts, that is fine. Do you know the last twenty meals the dame and sire of any of your snakes that you purchased ate??

Not really trying to start an arguement, but it is exactly this uneducated advice giving that has turned KS into what it is.

I think too many people here, and I love all of you guys, are too quick to call many of the other members out on being differen or not doing like they read in some 200 word article or off some care sheet.

It really is slowing the progress to the learning and the sharing of information that these forums were put together for.

Alright Im done for now

In an effort to get a few of my animals that refused to eat f/t anything I bought a few bags of frozen chicks from rodent Pro. These didn't stimulate feeding in the few live feeders I have either so I've been feeding them to my Colombians that will eat anything. If there is salmonella bacteria present in poultry products then wouldn't it be in these chicks too? I haven't noticed anything wrong or different after feeding them to my snakes.

with no ill effects. I understand and agree that salmonella is a threat to both the snakes and humans (more so for us humans, specifically young children). Salmonella is real and every precaution must be made to not come in contact with it. But I just think that many people take the media too seriously....

Hey you are writing not to take it personal?
But are calling me, ridiculous, uneducated and you expect for me not to take this personal.
I am just expressing my opinions and, Dude if you have problem with my opinions that is fine, but then again you are probably one of those that knows it all.
Sorry for expressing my opinions!!
If you read exactly what happened to red ear sliders you probably would understand my concerns are.

But I am as well. Oh yeah, and I am not a know it all! I actually know very little, so little in fact that when I read "opinions" on the forum I take them as the gospel truth not to be disputed by anyone.......

OK I must admit I lied, I do know it all! But some readers do not, and the last thing we need is a whole bunch of people that are new to boas or reptiles in general to "freak" out over the potential hazard of acquiring salmonella from their herps.......

Education is important and being educated in the spread of salmonella should be learned. And when you study the spread of salmonella (or other herp related topics) you as an individual with your own opinion can share with the rest of us what you learned and how you benefited or was harmed etc, etc. But those that come on the forum and talk about things that could potential further damage the reputation of the herp community should choose to voice their opinions wisely.

Enough for now....
Bob

Yes, we should Stop now, before we get into something you or I do not want.
I do not know much but it seems I should ask you next time I want to post, if it is OK with you.
Have a great one.
