"Signs of Breeding"

johnbort2 Dec 11, 2005 03:17 PM

In the "Breeding 101" post, Rainbows-r-us said he had seen "signs of breeding". What are those signs. I am new to breeding and would like to know what some signs are. Prolly a stupid question, but couldn't find the answer by searching.

My experience with this the male will be anxious and much less nocturnal. He goes off feed and cruises often following the female and laying side by side or partially on top of her seemingly aligning himself with her. I have noticied the lower quarter or so of his body forming a zigzag around her. Often I can find sperm plugs in the cage somewhere...usually in the water. I haven't really noticed much change in the female other than she doesn't become reclusive by the attempt of the male.

Hey john, signs of breeding include:

Sperm plugs, typically in water.

For my cage setup the male is always in the same section as the female.

They also get quite active, re-arranging cage furniture and water bowls. (during this time, I lower the water levels, less to clean up afterwards.

refusing food, both females and males.

Aligning of tails.

Spurring, if you never seen it WOW do those spurs move....over 180 degrees of motion.

Copulation....duh, best sign!!

Hope this helps

Thanks Dave, I appreciate it. I got the best sign last night..copulation! I heard the newspaper rustling in the cage and they had their tails tied up. We will see how it goes.
