Are Corn snakes good starter snakes?

Crizzi27 Dec 11, 2005 04:44 PM

I was wondering if anyone has opinions on this, since all of you have had or have corn snakes. I was told that they are great starters. I am looking for a snake that will not grow to more than 3-4 feet and that generally has a well tempermant and attitude. I have two savannah monitors, and no experience with snakes. Any input would be great.

Thank you
Christina

without question these are wonderful starter snakes, possibly the best starter out on the market. Glad you are intersted in these awesome snakes, I have 4 of my own!

If you can handle savannah monitors, corn snakes will be a breeze. I have never been bitten by an adult corn snake. Babies bit occasionally, but only out of fear, or if they have not been handled (or if you try to handle them after handling mice). Corns are easy going and are easy to care for.
I would definitely recommend a corn as a starter snake. Make sure, like with any new pet, you research on its needs/requirements, care, health.

I am going to purchase all the reading I can find today and start buying supplies for the cage, I was planning on putting him/she in a 55 gallon tank that would be decorated and look like their natural habitat but I was told to stay with a smaller tank as they are babies and work up from there.

Yes
Corn snakes are excellent beginner snakes.
They have a wide range of colors and patterns.
They have good appetites.
They do not require elaborate housing.
They are inexpensive (at least the more common morphs)
They tame well and are easy to handle.
Hatchlings can be a little nippy but that is simply due to the fact that everything is a threat to a little hatchling snake. They calm down as they get older.
Feeding is inexpensive. For one or two snakes you are talking no more then a couple of dollars a week, and much less if you buy frozen.
So, YES a corn snake is a great first snake
If you can handle savannah monitors there should be no problem with corns

Not just "good" starters... "GREAT" starters. Corns have all the qualities you're looking for. Of course, individual snakes can differ in temperament, but for the most part, they're not skittish or biters. Learn how to keep them, and you'll really enjoy it.

King Snakes are also pretty gentle. Stay away from the milks as a starter...

Good luck,

Walt

I am going to go with a corn for now. Everyone sems to love them, but if I was on the boa forum I think they would say the same. Thanks for your opinion.

Corns are a great starter snake and also a great snake for someone with 50 years experience. I will be keeping corns when I am well into my 70's

Sounds like me a few months ago. Got the first corn snake...and now I have 14 and more on the way. They're great personality wise, and having a savannah or two just assures that any mice your corns happen to refuse will not go to waste!

Just be aware that corn snakes are very addictive. Sort of like scaley, slithery potato chips! It's hard to stop at just one!

I like your comparison to chips. That is cute. I never liked reptiles, until my boyfriend brought our big Savannah home about 10 months ago. He’s my Loki, and my kid. I carry him like a baby, he is a baby. I would recommend them to anyone with the time. About two months ago we rescued one, he is doing well, but my boyfriend has wanted a snake for a while. So since I have heard such good things about the corns and after my new found love of savannahs, I figure what the heck. The mice will never go to waste. I go through about 20 mice a week on my guys so a couple extra will not hurt. Thank you fro responding. Hopefully I will not want to purchase too many. I would like to diversify my animals but I spend a lot of time with my reptiles and will not have more than the time I have to spend with them. That is why our savannah is such a great pet and I hope our snake will be too.

A question for you. Since you have had savanna monitors, did you have much problems with them when they were young? I should go to another forum, I guess. My savanna is a mean little lizard. I wondered if it was just this ones temperment and I know I need to work with it.
