joshnuber Dec 11, 2005 04:56 PM

Hey everyone. I have a green burmese who is about 6 months old now and he is about 6-7 ft long.. My question is has anyone had a burm that was vary particular about his frozen foods. Mine seems to only respond to them if there are freshly thawed out and warmed up...now when i say freshly thawed i mean within 12 hours. just curious.he is a great eater as i imagine most burms are. I have had him since my uncle hatched him.he is a very nice snake..very tame and non aggresive.just curious about the frozen thawed eating thing..

I also had problems with my green burm when I first got her. She would not eat, she would snap at the food, and then only eat live and then she would not eat at all. Eventually I got it down. I then tried pre killed, still just snaps. Well then I warmed them up in water and she was eating them like crazy. Then one day I accidently lost it off my tongs and well she was learking so I wanted to wait until she left the area so I could try to wiggle it again and well I came back and hour later and it was gone, and that has been since, just drop it in there and she gets it. At the size you are talking about and age is when she started eating like a burm. At least for me. But they had to be warmed in water first or she would not eat them. Now she eats anything.

12 hours is a pretty long time to leave thawed food out. Try to feed as soon as possible after warming it up.

It's very common for snakes (not just burms) to only want to eat warmed food. Many will get used to room temperature food after a while, but it's probably better to warm it up anyway. You'll usually get a better feeding response, plus it will help a bit with digestion.

Every snake has their own unique personality. We have a large bushmaster at our facility that will ONLY take large rats that have been microwaved for 10-12 seconds; not something I would ever recommend but this snake will starve itself to death unless it is "properly prepared". I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks guys for your input...I'm not too worried about him as he is eating good and the same day I posted he ate one thawed no problem .It seems recently his feeding response is getting better. I'm sure with age he will eat thawed more readily. I would love to get him to the point where he would eat right off the floor of the enclosure..Thanks guys.
