Dragon with a broken leg?

wingl Dec 11, 2005 05:29 PM

I'm new to dragons and got a pair of girls about 8" from nose to tail from the same clutch. I have them together in a 30gal tank and they've been getting along fine for about 3 weeks. Today I go to feed them and the smaller of the two has a badly bitten front leg and the other has a bit of blood on the mouth. Seems like they were fighting and she got the worst of it. The good news is the bleeding had stopped, but she's not moving it at all. I'll get her to a vet ASAP, but is there any temporary aid? She's eating when I feed her, so I don't think it's life threatening. I've seperated the two with a divider for now. Any tips?

looks like they will be seperated for the rest of their lives.

IF, and i mean IF they can live together (in which 98% of the time they CAN'T) you need 40 gallons per dragon.

but if they have already fought....sounds like it's time to buy another enclosure...or continue with the divider

Thanks for the info. The guy I bought them from said since they are from the same clutch and same sex, they could. Oh well, live and learn. She's a lot more alert today. Eating is not a problem. She's still not moving that leg though, just dragging it around and it's in a backwards position. Not a painful looking position, just backwards like in a resting position. You think it'll ever be back to normal or will she have a gimp leg the rest of her life? Once they get bigger, space won't be an issu. I have it planned out. Thanks again.

Till you take her to a vet, you can put some neosporin (the kind without any painkillers) cream onto the wound. Or any other kind of anti-biotic cream. Also, if she's not already on it, move her to a cage with just basic furnature and papertowel substrate. Provide a low basking spot so she can bask without having to climb up to her basking spot.

Though it is possible for bearded dragons to be housed together, some just do not get along. Not sure how young your two dragons are but if they are fighting, separating is the best option. There are alot of cons for keepi ng dragons together as it is. You encountered one of them, fighting. Dragons are not very social animals.

You deffinitely want to get her to a vet ASAP. Today would be best, if you are not already doing so.

have you checked the leg at all. Like moving it around to see signs of pain? It maybe just sore from the bite. I had 3 bearded dragons cage together and every once and a while i would catch them fighting. My female was the worse of the three. but, 99% of the time they free roamed my house and when it got hot outside they whould start with their head bobing and some one would get chased out of the room. They never inflicked any damage just some soar legs and tails. My beadies are very social. but get in bad moods towards each other.
