Question regarding blotch counts in corn and emory rat snakes

dingoblue Dec 11, 2005 05:31 PM

Hello everyone,

What is the variance of dorsal blotch counts in corn snakes when compared to emory/great plains rat snakes? Also, do emoryi have differently/more densely patterned ventral regions when compared to a corn snake?

I've recently acquired a pair of 05 ghost corns, and I believe that the female in this pair may have some emory/great plains ancestry. I know this could be possible due to the creamsicle lines introduced decades ago, but she has a dorsal blotch count of 34 and a heavily blotched ventral area. Her spearpoint has an odd shape as well. The male ghost has 28 blotches, and a ventral area that resembles more of a corn snake lineage.

Thanks in advance

I don't remember the exact counts but I believe the emoryi rats tend to have a higher blotch count then corns. As high as the low 70's but probably anywhere from the 40's up.
The corns tend to have lower blotch counts.
I really should know this and plan to look it up shortly. I do work with emoryi/corn mixes afterall. This is pertinant information.
with 34 and 28 I would be confident in saying they are both indeed corns.
Head patterns in corns can be so varied there is no way to identify emoryi blood by the head pattern.

Draybar,

Thanks.

What about the ventral blotches and patterns when comparing emoryi and guttatus?

The morphology of these two species/subspecies is very interesting.
