Snake mites and Suggested treatment ????

biscuit71 Dec 11, 2005 07:33 PM

I know this question has been asked probably thousands of times and most of the posts i seem to remember suggested a treatment that i believe isnt available anymore. What is a good treatment for Mites and do i get it from my Vet. I have been keeping snakes for about 5 years now (no expert here) and I have never had a snake with mites. I have had this little guy about 3 weeks or so... maybe a month. I was a small "bug" when i first got him, but it was on the edge of his water bowl right after i got him. He shed about a week back, and i checked him over a few days ago, and he was fine, Today, i saw him soaking his head... very strange i thought, so i took him out and looked him over. one of his eyes looks like it has a retained eye-cap, but I am sure it is caused by the mites. i could see one mite on him, so i removed it and killed it, but i couldnt see much else... well, i took a pic (attached) and you can REALLY seem them now. Made my skin crawl to say the least... HOW do i kill the little buggers... And WILL this harm my snake any more than having bugs crawling around his eyes... (Gross!!)
Any and all help is greatly appreciated..

Sean

Where do I get it? and how about the skin at the front of his eye.. does it look like a retained cap or could it jsut be irritation caused by the mites. the eye i took the photo of is the eye that has the mites.. the other eye isn't close to being as bad.

i had the same problem and i asked the same question on nov 14.
i got alot of help, and found a few very effective treatments, and i was mite free in 2 weeks( not long by most standards)
go to page 2 of the forum, and check out the posts, there was a website that was suggested to check out on there, and it worked for me.
i treated my snakes using betadine and vegetable oil on the visible mites, and daily cleanings of the enclosure. it worked well for me
andi got very mixed reviews about the mite treatments available in petshops
good luck
