bluish black racers

rhyion Dec 11, 2005 07:55 PM

i read about how northern black racers are ALL black except the chin, and im pretty sure thats not entirely accurate. I live in massachusetts and have caught several racers that are dark above, whitish bellow, and have a bluish tint at the edge of the belly scales. this is a northern black racer right? but why isnt it all black like all these websites say? has anyone else in the new england area found racers like this?

Rhyion,
I live in western N.Y. where racers are found, but they are extremely local. All the racers I have found in this area have had quite a bit of bluish tint to them, mainly on the belly and also the sides to some degree. Snakes that have such a wide range as the black racer are going to show some degree of variability. Just the same, the black racers I have found in Pa, and Md have been for the most part as black as the ace of spades, and I've caught some from southern Md that were a grayish-black, almost lead colored. Great looking racer though, happy hunting and good luck in all your herping endeavors!
