Well thanks to temperature fluctuations I hatched my first deformed baby =

WaxWormFan May 18, 2003 05:44 PM

Enlarged head, one tiny and probably useless eye, red bruised belly (probably internal bleeding....

It's not pretty....

This is more than likely from an almost 10* fluctuation in incubation temperatures that was witnessed twice thanks to my cheap hovabator.

I'm not happy..............

Some times even deformed animals can live a happy long life though. Can it walk around an stuff?

WaxWormFan May 18, 2003 06:51 PM

I hope it makes it.... its the baby of two of my absolute favorite geckos.

I'll keep it as a pet as long as it doesn't seem to be suffering.

I feel so bad =(

I replace the wafer assembly every year in mine, and haven't yet noticed temp. fluctuations like you experienced.

Poor little guy. Did the temp of the incubator just fluctuate or was there a power outage? The incubator I am using is 5 years old (a still air for hatching chicken eggs) but I have had it working for 2 weeks and the temp only fluctuates from 80-82 degrees so I don't think age would have affected it. Most likely the thermostat was cheap and broke. Again I am really sorry...sometimes these things happen. Keep us updated on the lil one.

No power outage.. actually the temps actually changed 10* twice- once an increase and once a decrease... the first time I compensated for it, and it stayed stable for a week before happening again. Since then it's done it one more time with an increase of "only" 6*

are feeling about now. i am using hobovators and that coupled with our extremely warm first few months and a shotty insulated house... my temps have fluctuated and i have lost quite a few eggs and have had a few deformities, in which i ended up putting the babies down, to me it wasnt fair to them. we have since moved our incubators into another room, and are in the process of bulding a new incubator from scratch(out of an old refrigerator)
i am again sorry to hear this, and at this point all we can do is realize what happened and change it so it doesnt happen again

Except I think mine is because of too much humidity.

I went away for a few days and the incubator got too humid inside where the eggs are. I had one leo born deformed and 2
others drowned in the eggs. One was a blizzard, the other a het.

The deformed baby was an albino. Her eyelids were malformed and her back legs had a membrane across the back of the leg, keeping her from moving them properly. Her vent seemed to be malformed too.
She looked like she was getting a R.I from being on damp paper towels and when she was on dry her eyes crusted over. She didn't eat, hardly drank. She would walk right off my hand. She wouldn't even swallow when I tried to forcefeed. She'd just spit everything out.
I just put her down after 13 days of trying... I couldn't stand to see her suffer and stress like that. She was already loosing weight.

Good luck with your little one tho. Hopefully she'll be okay.
