55 gallon too big?

Crizzi27 Dec 12, 2005 09:40 AM

OK, I have decided to go with a corn snake. The colors and patterns are not a big deal to me, I look more for the attitude, if I was going to breed them then that would be another thing. I have a 55 gallor reptile aquarium, I was just wondering if that would be too big for a baby? Well I am not going to purchase one untill Christmas is closer. I am going to start the shopping today(my reptiles are spoiled) so I may be on with some questions about the cage. I will pick up a few books too. If anyone has any ideas that have worked for them feel free to share.

Thanks,
Christina

A 55 might be a little intimidating for a hatchling corn. I keep my hatchlings in shoebox size containers until they grow up a little and arent as flighty. This helps them feel more secure and not as stressed in my opinion. A 55 would be great though as an adult as you could do up a great viv with that size tank. Keep it small for a few months and let your knew little one put some size on before throwing him/her in a tank that size.

Ok I was wondering because I go all out for my animals, they are spoiled worse than kids. I wanted to do a crazy cage so it was like the outside, with plants and waterfalls, etc. I have so many ideas. I need to do the proper research first. I have 10 gallon tanks or smaller mice carriers that are probably around 5-8 gallons. Maybe I will use one of those for now. I like to try and replicate their natural environment as closely as I can.

That sounds like a good plan. My three '05's (milk, king, corn) have plenty of room in 5 gal herp tanks from Petsmart (with sliding, locking tops). I can fit water bowl, 3 different hides, branches, etc to give them lots of opportunity for climbing and hiding. Only the milk skips all these and constantly hides under the substrate (paper towel now, newspaper in the pic below)! I have one of these for each snake.

I was wondering because I have a 55 gallon reptile aquarium from my monitor before we built a 10 ft long, 4 ft high by 3 ft wide tank for the two so I was going to utilize that space, or I have a fish tank I think they call it a hexagon, the six sided, flat back, it is about 3 feet long by 2 1/2 feet tall, I can use that also. Some one threw it away at my apartment complex so I went out, picked it up, and cleaned it. It came with a stand that is for storage and everything. Talking about getting a great deal. Or I have room on my mice stand for one more 10 gallon, but I was hoping to get rid of that to clear up some more space. I attempt to breed my own mice, but my monitors gobble them up way too fast so I can never keep up.

Are you telling me that all the baby corns out there that are cruising the world are intimidated cause they arent living in a tiny plastic box?
