Sterilzation of wood: baking needed or not?

deanerh Dec 12, 2005 09:44 AM

A friend just brought me a piece of drift wood that will be perfect in our cage. I am going to soak it in a clorox solution after power washing it. And I had been planning on baking it in the oven as well, per some of the advice on this forum. However, its simply too long. Any thoughts on if I can skip this step if I get after it with the soak? Also, is there any advantage to also doing a Nolvasan bath?

If you soak it in bleach and THOUROUGHLY rinse ALL bleach residue from it you'll be fine.

As an extra measure, a Nolvasan soak wouldn't hurt.

Once the driftwood is soaked in a bleach solution, rinsed very well and allowed to air dry in a well ventilated area (outside is best) for 24 hours to ensure all chlorine fumes/residue is disipated, you don't need to bake it or wash it in anything else.

Hey Dean,
The only problem with using Driftwood is that all sorts of crickets will run into the cracks and will come out at night and cause problems for Jack. I am yet to find a piece that does not have a bunch of cracks.
