my little scare

rehabella Dec 12, 2005 11:51 AM

This morning I went to check on my amel, and noticed on her rock she had a perfect shed. I went to look for her and to my horror i could not find her. I started to panic and thought maybe my dog got to her cause she was acting weird. Then I thought she new where she was. As I was looking, my husband was searching through the cage too. I really started to panic, and then he tells me to stop panicing cause she was in the cereal box. What a sigh of relief that was. I put an empty box in the cage because it was too big, so I wanted to shorten it so she would feel secure.

I had something similar with my Jalisco milk yesterday. Tried to get him to eat in a separate container which previously was the enclosure for my daughter's corn snake. Well, he was trying to look for a way out, and I thought, "Wow, he can really stick to the side of that plastic!". Then I realized he was stuck on a little glue residue from the stick-on thermometer I'd removed. He popped off it pretty easily, and I then used tape to get the rest off the Critter Keeper, but it scared me there for a sec. I'd read horror stories about snakes getting stuck on duct tape...

My little cream got stuck to a lot of duct tape the very first day I had her. Spent about 2 hours getting the tape off with olive oil and let me tell you she was none too happy about it.

Needless to say, her first shed in my possession tore at the places where the duct tape was stuck and I had to take it off manually. Her second shed, earlier this week went flawlessly.

She's now grown 6 inches since I've had her. No Scarring whatsoever.

My scare was this... my aunt who is very afraid of snakes made arrangements in early October to visit for Thanksgiving. I let her know that I had snakes in the house and she reluctantly took my word that she would not even see the snakes and I would not talk about them.

Needless to say, 4 days before she came, my 22 inch corn snake got out of his enclosure (I forgot to close the door - I know STUPID). I looked from top to bottom for 3 days and couldn't find him. I looked everywhere! At the end, I gave up, just hoping that my aunt's visit would come and go (she stayed for a week) and that the snake would either stay hidden or come out "privately".

The night before my aunt came, I saw an "extension cord" move. There he was! WHEW! Of course, the first thing out of my kids mouths when she came was "My dad lost his corn snake, but he found it yesterday."

My first corn got out and we never found it. It was a little thing, so I assume its dead or moved out. My aunt swears she will not visit until all my snakes are accounted for.

When I first started my snake collection, I had a metal screen top duct taped on one side, to act like a hinge. Well, needless to say, the baby king that was in that cage got loose. I did not find it for two days and when I did, it was stuck to that tape from tail to nose! I had no idea how to get him off and he was pretty mad at my attempts and for being stuck to the tape for a day or more. I did my best to peal him off as gently as possble. There were spots on the duct tape where his scales were stuck! I figured he'd die from the stress. He was better the next day and fully recovered after he shed. He is alive and well, and I know better to use any tape near my snakes. Live and learn! The best lessons learned are the hard way.
