Eating problem

rinoa05_1987 Dec 12, 2005 01:00 PM

Hello all,
I was looking for a few opinions on what to do about my leo not eating. About a month ago he started refusing to eat mealworms, and I thought that he was going into brumation(Sp. His eating habits still haven't changed over the past month, and he refuses to eat anything except wax worms, and almost dead crickets. He will act really excited when I drop crickets into his tank, and start going after them, stop before he gets to the cricket and then just go back to his favorite spot. I've only caught his eat a cricket that was flipped onto its back and had been squirming around for a few hours. My question is, should I keep trying to feed crickets and avoid wax worms, or try something else. any suggestions are welcome. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have parasites as I took him to the vet about six months ago, of course its possible for him to get them from infected food, in that period of time, but its unlikely. thanks for any help.

Yeah, I would lay off the waxworms. You can slow down the crickets by removing their back legs You could continue to leave a small dish of mealworms for him in case he gets hungry late at night. He could definately be going into brumation. If he's not really losing weight then I wouldn't worry too much, unless other symptoms start showing like running stools, regurgitation or noticeable weight loss etc.

I haven't fed him any wax worms since about two weeks ago, if not a bit more. I've been told that you can remove the legs, but crickets creep me out way to much to get anywhere near them. There hasn't been ay runny stool, and no significant weight loss, just a bit of weight loss. thanks for the suggestion and reasurrance.

LOL You can get use to messing with crickets, ya just have to give it a try. But, since you can't bring yourself to hold one long enough to snip off it's back legs . . . you might try putting a couple in a container and setting them in the refrigerator for a few minutes just before giving them to your Leo. This will slow them down too. I've seen several people say they do this. Just be careful you don't leave them too long it will also kill them if they get too cold
