Tegu not eating!!! Help.

doomar Dec 12, 2005 02:01 PM

I have a columbian tegu approx 7 months old. He has not eaten in 4 days. He does not seem to be interested in food at all. He is still very active when he comes out of his terrarium. I just made him a new terrarium alot warmer than his old one. I thought maybe it was due to the move from one terrarium to another. I have tried egg (his favourite), pinkie mice another fav., banana, and super worms.. All the food he love but he is still not interested. Help.

Well, you just moved your buddy into a new cage right? I suggest you stop handling him for a few days and keep trying to feed him. If a learned anything from working at a pretty sizeable reptile section of a pet store, and my own tegu keeping, sometimes handling can stress them out. Anytime you move a reptile to a new cage, you want them to settle in before you make them deal with the stress of being handled.
good luck!

I have two Columbian Tegus, approx. 1.5 years old. They were great but getting terribly crowded in a 55 gallon aquarium, and I moved them to their new 4'x8' palace about three weeks ago. It's warmer and more humid than what they had before. They look good, and are moving around, but have eaten almost nothing since the move. I haven't been holding them. Any ideas?

Make sure you are using a well made temperature gage, and know exactly how warm it is. big cages only heated in a specific spot have a tendency to remain cold else-where. what material is the cage made out of? wood and melimine are harder to heat than plastic cages. check the temps all around the cages, and make sure you have pleanty of hide spots.
good luck!

Thanks Hoggman,
I have 2 lamps one on either side of the terraium. It is pretty evenly heated right now. I have a heating pad under the substrate to keep his sleeping side warm from underneath that he seems to love. It is made out of wood sealed on all sides save for the door which has screen mesh on it.If I can make it better let me know, I will try to post a pic of the new terrarium soon.

Kewl thanks everyone for the posts. It's good to know we are not the only ones with problems. We will leave him alone for a bit and keep some food in his terraium for a while and see. His new terrarium is almost twice the size of his old terrarium. I will keep you posted if anything changes.

Just to keep everyone up to date, he is eating a little bit now (in his terrarium). He is going through a massive shed right now. This is the biggest shed I have seen him do since we got him. Hopefully he'll be ready to come back out into the world soon. Thanks for all the help.

I actually have a question, my tegu is not losing weight at all and he seems to be sleeping alot more. Could it be that my tegu is forcing himself to hibernate no matter what I do?? Please help.
