picky dragon

kjn Dec 12, 2005 03:08 PM

my dragon has been very finicky about eating lately. He used to eat anything i would feed him, hand feed, but all the sudden he has eaten about 1/2 of what he used to in crix out of my hand. he still eats the veggies. bm's have been normal and everything else seems fine. any ideas? thanks

from that picture, i'd say your dragon sure looks funny..LOL

seriously tho...the seasonal temperatures are getting lower and the actual sun set is happening sooner. This time of year is the good ol brumation time. Even if your dragon is less than 1 year old it kind of goes through like a half-brumation.

Right now my 6 year old male and 5 year old female are out cold. While my 8 month old is a little less active and eating less but still basking all the time.

You don't have much to worry about...this happens.

yea, he's got this ring around his neck and has been feeding on fish lately... nah, just a little something to look at. my guy is coming up on 4 years old. I considered the shortening days, brumation and all that, but i thought about last year, and although he did slow down last year, it was normally on the veggies, not the crix. u think he's just switchig it up on me this year? i'm gonna take him into the vet tomarrow. i'm convinced its no big deal, but i wanted to take him in before i go back up to school anyways, i'll post how it goes. cheers

Adult bearded dragons typically don't need much insects, greens should be the bulk of their diet, at least 90% of their daily intake. The rest would be insects. A few crickets a day or a couple feedings of insects 2-3 times a week is fine.

If it isn't usual for your dragon to brumate, and the temps/daylight time in his cage have not changed, might be a good ideal to take him to a vet for an examination and fecals, to be on the safe side. Though it could be just brumation, loss of appetite and less activity could be caused by alot of other things.
