"Then and now" pictures, anyone?

HANGER Dec 12, 2005 03:35 PM

Does anyone have pictures of their brongersmai as hatchlings and as (red) adults, please?

I am just hoping to get a feel for what to look for when buying hatchlings, because like most keepers I am most interested in specimens that will become nice red adults.

Obviously, the best way is to buy captive bred stock from a reputable breeder that you know and trust(!), and to look at the breeding adults, but that's not always possible.

My request has been stimulated by the arrival of a shipment of 'farmed' babies here in Denmark. Will they turn out to be mediocre brown adults, or stunning red 'screamers'..................?

Thanks in advance for any imput.

Mark

P.S. Pic is of a holdback Borneo

Hey,
That's just incredible Kevin. What a difference some years make. One just never know's, what their little bloods will turn out like.

Actually, I was hoping that you would reply, because the word on the web - well here on kingsnake anyway- is that you have some great animals!

However, there doesn't seem to be an easy way of picking a winner. The only thing I can comment on the first picture is that it has good contrast.

Incidentally, do you know the geographical origin of the animal or bloodline, and when does the dark head start to appear?

Thanks

Hey,thanks a lot Mark. I do not know the locale that this bloodline originated from. I do know that she is CBB,I have seen pics of her parents, and they are both RED. It's tough to pick out a young Blood that you think IS going to turn out RED. RED parents are your best bet,but even that is no gaurantee that a random hatchling WILL be red. It's been my experience that the heads on the hatchling dark headed Bloods will change often, and stay darker for longer periods as they get a year old or so. Here is another pic comparison for you Mark. right out of the egg, to 1 year old

Hey K,
That is such a special blood. I think you know that. Awesome!

I for one won't be complaining if I bought a hatchling and it turned out like that!

Thanks again

Hey,
That is an awesome Borneo too. If this little one holds onto some of that color he or she will be outstanding as an adult.

Thanks for the response, Angel. I'll keep you posted on how he shapes up in the future!

By the way, I've been in touch with Ondrej Divis regarding his black P. curtus. Looks like he will probably be resting his female this season because of moving and the large clutch last time. So I'll just have to be patient.......!

Then...

And Now...

Her Daddy is a screaming red, but she looks just like her mom. However, her mom came from high red parents... I love her all the more for being yellow :D

bigcountry1 Dec 13, 2005 08:41 PM

i like that big stripe down her back

SnakeFreak Dec 15, 2005 07:20 PM

How old is she in the first pic? I just got a hatchling female, and she's about 1/3 the size yours is in the first pic.

She was born in early august, and I think I took that pic shortly after her first shed, which was mid-october??? Either way, she was several months old, and eating either 2 adult mice or small rats by that point in time.

She's just not even a year and a half old and already over 4 feet long... so maybe she's just a fast grower??

SnakeFreak Dec 17, 2005 09:49 AM

She is growing pretty fast, I got my Columbian Boa at the beginning of August last year, and he's a couple inches under 4', and they grow pretty fast. Here's a pic of mine.

This one is developing more color than most. Her sister is even nicer.

HANGER Dec 16, 2005 05:41 PM

Red from day one!
Keep us posted as to how she shapes up - both appearance and temprement - I've heard Malays can be nasty, but I'm sure that's all ignorance and exaggeration!.........

She and her siblings have never even hissed, not to mention, tried to bite me. However, now that they are a bit older, two will sometimes strike the side of their sweater boxes as you walk by. Its just an agressive ambush feeding response, because you can take them right out and pick them up no problem. Thanks.

idiotjeff Dec 17, 2005 12:07 PM

heres a girl from kitchi's litter she's amazing and soooo tame

Seems like it's just luck of the draw picking a winner, although the nicest adults seem to have good contrast as hatchlings - that's all I can surmise.

I guess I'll have to be patient and find an honest and trustworthy breeder here in Europe, who has some good adult animals.

However, I can't resist driving over to check out those farmed imports - maybe I'll get lucky!

Keep you posted

seeing the parents is your best bet in my opinion, and you cant do that with the farmed kids
