Its been 6 weeks now since w. hog stopped eating. When should i start to worry??

Turtlequest Dec 12, 2005 05:02 PM

Ok, its been 6 weeks now. Temps are fine. The snake is getting a bit skinny. I don't want to lose this girl because she is a 100% het for albino.

How long is "safe" without eating. Am i over-reacting? Should i attempt a force-feed? Please help.

hi i am new to hognose, but i have been reading alot. From what i have read six weeks is about the limit before you go looking for help unless they are hibernating. Also i read that it is best to keep a gram scale and weigh them so when they go off feed you will know if they are losing wieght or just not eating. I know nothing of force feeding but i have heard that you can get a starter shot that you feed them re-establish their appitite

ok first, give us some more info.

how old is it?
has it fed for you before?
what did it feed on?(scented, unscented?)(dead or alive?)(size)
what are the cage temps?
any changes like its in a new cage or ?
is it in with other snakes?
does it look thin or weak yet?
how long have you had it?

and any other info that you may find helpful.

I had the snake since August. It fed on a Frozen thawed pink everyday until the end of October. Nothing has changed in the tank, and the male hog, which is her brother, is doing fat and fine.

you need to answer all the questions from my other post or I can not help you !!!

turtlequest Dec 13, 2005 06:47 PM

1. 5 months old
2. Yes, every week since i got it until Oct 28th
3. Frozen thawed pinks
4. Cage temps are 73 on cool side 90 on hot side
5. no changes to cage
6. It is in the same cage as a male hognose, but there is a divider in between them. It is a transparent divider, so they can see each other but never had contact.
7. She looks thin, but no weak at all.
8. I've had it since august

It took me awhile to get the temps right. Some days the hottest it was was in the 70's, some days high 90's was the hottest, but i recently have a steady temp which i stated above for over a month now.

Thanks.

Every thing sounds ok. (not sure if you have been feeding her in her cage or not)? and how big is the cage? so heres what I would do. put her in a small deli cup with 2 f/t pinkies before you go to bed and check her in the morning, I think one or more pinkies will be gone! but if not, put her back in her cage or were ever you have been feeding her and put a few f/t and if you have any, put in a live pinkie or two as well. put them in with her before bed time and try not to mess with her at all, just put the pinkies in and let her be tell morning time. if she does not eat, take out the pinkies and try again in a few days but leave her alone so she is not stressed. also, put her in her water bowl and see if she drinks a lot. I have had them just not be able to find there water and get a bit dehydrated and not want to feed until they get some water in them first. if none of this works after a week or two let us know and we can try some other ways. but I think this will work. let me know asap if she eats. thanks. and good luck!
