Bigcountry,
...Peruvian Rainbow Boas, Epicarates cenchria gaigei have fewer and larger scales than Brazilian Rainbow Boas, Epicrates cenchria cenchria. Because the scales are larger there are fewer of them on Peruvian Rainbows. The only way to accurately identify the subspecies is to count scales. Total scale counts are very tedious. Counts of scale rows at midbody are easier but still difficult on little snakes. Peruvian Rainbows have 41 to 45 scale rows at midbody. Brazilian Rainbows have 46 to 51 or 52 scale rows at midbody. Peruvians also usually have thicker and darker markings on their bodies and are often bigger heavier snakes with thicker necks. These color features and body size are not reliable indicators as there are many Brazilian Rainbows that have thick dark markiings and are heavy bodied. Looking at your PICs I am pretty certain the small one photographed in hand is a Brazilian. The other one is not so obvious. I would do a scale count on it.
Jeff
