Not just sand

Cable_Hogue Dec 12, 2005 06:19 PM

There are alternatives to having just a plain old sand terrarium. This photo shows my cornutum hatchlings reclining in a mix of a clay dirt substrata covered with the leaf litter from a nearby tree, with some native grass thrown in.
There may be some concern of undesired insects, but I figure they deal with these in the wild, and I am able to treat them for any mites that they might pick up.
Just some thoughts....
Cheers!

I think that looks great! If you where worried i wouldnt see harm in popping some in the oven for a while. what do you think?

do you know of any ornate grasses that might be harmful to Hl's? This spring i will be hitting the local empty lots and scouting some native plants that are drought hardy and talking with some people at the garden center.

I am hoping to have my 40 gal breeder set up by then ^^

did you pick up any of the substrate from a store? or just collect it from outside?

This was collected right outside my house, but we have a couple of acres of natural desert all around us so there is no worry of pesticide or whatnot.
HL's do have a little trouble with some types of grasses or weeds in that they can get caught in their mouths when lapping up ants.
Probably not too much of a worry unless it's just full of stickers and such.
If you want to grow live plants be sure and make the soil a good 8 to 10 inches deep.
You'll have to post some photos when it's done!
Cheers!
