What would i get with multiple males? and another Q.

Uberkid Dec 12, 2005 06:48 PM

i wanted to ask about multiple males to one female. i want to make plasma corns, ice ghost corns, and opal corns which all need a lavander to make. i was thinking instead of buying 3 girls what if i used one girl and cycled the males through her. would i get baby corn plasmas, ice ghosts and opals ALL in one clutch? or would it just be a messed up gene colors making a mixed colored snake?

also i wanted to know what would i get if i crossed opal and pewter? i guess i would get babies het for blizard, lavander and bloodred right? but what if kept all the babies and i bred those babies back together? wouldnt i get plasmas, blizards, charcoals, bloods, amels, opals? this has to be the single most smartest thing i have ever thought of! imagine the MONEY! AND i would get opals het for pewter!

You would probably only get one father for the clutch. Snakes generally leave a seminal plug (plastic-like) in the female's reproductive tract that persists and blocks the way until a fertilization would have normally taken place. The only way I could see getting multiple fathers for the clutch is if all sperm were introduced simultaneously, but I don't think lady snakes go in for that kind of thing either .

well why do people cycle then? if its not for different morphs in a clutch. that would suck if i had to get a lavander female for each male to make the snakes I want.

You know, I'm not actually sure. I've never actually tried breeding them. It may be that you can get multiple fathers. I'm just speaking from a biological background on what I've heard about some snakes and other animals.

Because you better believe a male snake in the wild has a way to try and make sure no other males fertilize females he's encountered.

Not more than one male can fertilize one egg. The babies that you would get would be what ever genes its father and mother carry. You can not have more than one father per egg and get mixed genes from each father in one baby, if thats what you were asking. If you want multiple fathers with the same female, use one for the first clutch and another for the second. This makes it easier to keep track of genes, traits. Other wise, you do not know who the father is of who and can not plan for future breeding.

Why not get one male lavender? That way he will breed all of your females!

lol phiber i never thought of that before! but the females might cost more but i guess its better than getting 3 lavander females and 3 males. 1male to 3 females! smart!

I would think this to be common sense. You do not need a male for every female. In most species, you want the females to outnumber the males. Pick a couple morphs you like for a male and have many females
