I work 2nd shift and usually get home around 3am.Well on Sat. night(Sunday morn)at about 3:30 am I am just sitting down to watch the news and hear about all the different ways the world is going to hell in a handbasket, when I heard a familiar noise from the snakeroom (the snake just hammered a rat noise)well thats bad because I am on a 10 day schedule with everything I have big enough to make a noise that loud and its only day 5 and I never leave anything in with them.Anyway I jumped up and actually ran to the snakeroom, thats when I say my female 50% poss. het albino and my male albino wrapped up,the female had the male by the head and was obviously the agressor. They have been together hopefully mating on and off since Nov.1.She shows strong CA influence so she is only 5ft and roughly eight pounds. She is a 2001 model while the male is 4 ft roughly 2-2.5 pounds and is almost 22 months old.He has not been agressive in courtship if anything a bit sneaky.Anyone know why this has happened. They are seperated now and I have no plans of reintro. Thanks in advance.

This is a scary topic. I've had this happen to me once. I had been houseing two females togather of the same size and walked into the snake room to find them wrapped up. It wasnt a feeding response I dont think cause they had just eatin two days prior. Needless to say I house all my snakes alone now. Both survived and are doing well but it still shook me up a bit. The reason I say its scary is cause sometimes when I introduce my males with females my females get into the strike position and look as if their gonna eat the little guys. From what I hear its not unheard for females to kill and sometimes eat males. I've read dont breed your animals unless you would be willing to loose them cause it very well could happen. Rich

i had introduce my male type two anery to a female and she is always a hungry aggressor girl .. they bred for about a month and then i seperated them to give them a small snack because they were still heavily breeding ... when i put the male back in with her .. i guess she was still hungry, well she always seems hungry and she bit him by the head and started to wrap him and eat him!!! .. LUCKILY, after i seperated them the male wasn't hurt to bad and he started breeding a different female later that week .. as if nothing happened .. when i introduce males to females with heavy feeding responses now, i spray them with water to make them go back and supress there hunger strike ...
it was defitnetly crazy and my heart stopped!!!

good luck
adam

If so what was your experience. How do I tell if she is "fed up" with the males advances. Also does anyone think that this means she is indeed gravid?Thank you for all responses.John

I had this happen last year with my big BCI female named Xena. The bad new is me and my family where out of town for the week when this happened and when I came home my male striped het for albino was dead in her cage. I believe she killed him the day after we left. Boy did my house stink when I can home. I could smell the stench even before I opened the front door. She did not eat him but it looked like she bite his head and constricted him. Xena has never showed any aggression with any males so this was a big surprise for me. I now keep a very close eye on all my breeding females. I also pull all my male out of the females cages when I go out of town now. Very expensive lesson I learned.
Here is the male she killed.

Take care
Tom

hi
so if a female ovulation has happend and normaly the male looses intrest, then its normal.
,BUT if a virgin male goes on breeding her and doesnt now that he has done the job,
coold it be an agressive respons or is she hungry if she strikes at him,
i ask this because i think my female had her ovulation and my male is still breeding her,and now my female is more active to wath i think is a feeding respons when i walk in to the room.

SHOOLD I PULL THE MALE NOW OR WATH?

thanks toine

I was feeding all of my smaller animals and my Adult Dumerils did the same thing. But the WAY smaller male was the attacker. He bit the female in the neck and they both constricted each other. The female is about 8', and the male is maybe 5'. I grabbed my spray bottle that I use to clean water dishes with(a diluted listerine mix) and gave them a few squirts. They let go pretty quick, and I imediately seperated them. They have been together for over a month. The smell of food in the room definately triggered it. Not fun!!!

I have a large female thats just recently become gravid so the male is still in with her. I come into the room to clean water bowls and POWER she trying to eat him!! And trust me, if I hadent held them both underwater her would have!! Scared the crap out of me! He has a few cuts Im treating......dang!

Snakes are creature of opportunity. You may want to wash the smell of Rodent off of your animals before putting them back together again becouse the female will be laying there waiting in her ambush position and all of a sudden you have this male poking and prodding on her with his head smelling like a little Rat. The female smells Rat and sees movement and figures if it moves like a rat and smells like a rat then it must be dinner.
I would never introduce a snake that smelled of rodent to another snake you are bound to have problems.
Hope this helps

A simple feeding mishap niether of these snakes had been fed in 5 days. Thanks for your reply anyway.

Naja_kaouthia Dec 14, 2005 07:47 PM

If you go through here and look at everyones post Every single one of them say "I just fed them and put them together" I am not attacking you with my post but snakes can smell rodents after 5 days But hell if you already know what the problem was then why ask everyone else?

Sloas Dec 14, 2005 11:08 PM

I didnt intend to sound like I was striking at you,and yes I reread my post and it did sound bad on my part,Im truly sorry that was not my intention.I just wanted people to understand that their last feeding was 5 days prior.Maybe he did still smell like a rat.Thank you and once again I am sorry.I thank everyone for their input.
