Bathroom Frequency

Kiknskreem Dec 12, 2005 10:39 PM

I was just noticing that my burm goes to the bathroom quite often. He urinates 2-3 times a week, much more often than any other species of snake I've owned. I'm not concerned, just wondering if you all have found its common to the species. He's about 3 months old, eating two large rat pups a week.

That seems a bit off and I might recommend a couple of things:

1) Cut back on the feeding a tad (what do you feed, how many of that prey item do you feed in a single feeding, how often do you feed). The act of digesting prey for a cold blooded animal can be quite taxing which is why many captive burms live a shortened life span; most are fed far too much.

2) Get a complete vet check up including fecals and bloodwork. This will tell you if the liver/kidneys are functioning properly and whether there is some sort of infection taking place that could be causing this excessive passing of urates.

3) And, then again, there may be nothing wrong; just a fast growing burm with a rather unusually active metabolism.

That's why I always recommend getting to a vet; if nothing else, it brings peace of mind.

He eats two rap pups, each the equivelant size of a small mouse or large hopper weekly. He does drink, alot, as well as soaks. His going does coinside with his meals. It may also be worth pointing out that he's not passing solid urate so often, its just that he makes a copious amount of liquid pee. I'll cut his feeding slightly, see if it changes.

Can I ask a dumb question? How is your humidity? My burm seems to do this when the humidity in the tank isn't up to par per his specs Don't really know if that is why he does it, but it seem to corespond with low humidity in his enclosurre. I know female Ball Pythons will do this when they are left to incubate their eggs. Just a thought.

His humidity is 60%. I was looking over his feeding record and his goings are really in sync with how often he is eating. Suppose this whole post was a bit premature.
