Question on Emoryi Ratsnakes?

Steve_Craig Dec 12, 2005 10:52 PM

I will be purchasing me an 05 hatchling Emoryi ratsnake very soon, and I was curious if their background color & saddle color tend to lighten up, darken, or stay pretty much the same as they mature? I know corns develope yellow pigment at a later stage, which has a big influence on the corns color. With the emoryi rats, I wasn't sure if it's a case with what you see as a hatchling, equates to what you see as an adult. Thanks in advance.

Steve

Ask Don Soderberg. He used to have a ton of emoryi projects, but sold them all about a year ago.
Good luck!

I would say they should stay pretty much the same as they are as babies, but it depends on their ancestry too. I'm not too experienced with the emoryi subspecies, but my emoryi have actually gotten a little lighter than their neonate colors. My meahllmorum babies have kept neonate colors, one of which is quite dark. Remember there's variation even in a single clutch.

The female I'm picking up is a South Eastern Oklahoma locality Emoryi. No doubt about the variation. Like I told Dusty in my other post, I'm trying to decide between to females, where one has lighter saddles then the other. But I believe I'm going with the lighter colored one. In addition, she also has a better head pattern that I like. Beautiful meahllmorum that you have, and thanks for your imput.

The Emoryi rat I'm getting is coming from Don. He has two females left, with one of them having lighter colored saddles, and the other female with a little darker saddles. Ground color is about the same on both. That's why I brought up that question on here, to help me decide on which female to choose. I like the looks of the lighter colored one, but I'll ask Don they will develope about the same as adults. Thanks

No problem, Steve.
I'm from Texas, and I've seen some of the WC animals from there. But now I am going to school in Utah, and I would really love to find the "intermontanus" phase of emoryi that we get way up here in the eastern part of the state. Really different from any guttata race I've ever seen...and quite rare. Don used to have some of those too, I believe. There's a pic of that he took in Kathy's newer book.
I'd like to know where they went.
Take care,
Dusty R.
