Emoryi....

Do they make good captives as compared to corns and black rats? Do w.c. seem to tame down well if taken while young?

Phiber, I don't have any northern Great Plains (E.e.emoryi/P.g.emoryi), but I do have Southern Plains/Southwestern Rats (E.e.meahllmorum/P.g.meahllmorum), a subspecies of emoryi. I think they are probably pretty similar in habits. Wild caughts usually calm down pretty quickly whether they are juvenile or adult, but as with all species, there are exceptions and some can remain nervous for a long time. Their care is about the same as for Corns. The problem with wc is that they can have a heavy parasite load and should be quarantined from the rest of your snakes, and checked by a vet.- Toby

Just a quick note. All the snakes mentioned in this thread are the same species. They are all subspecies of P. guttatus (E. guttata).

Some taxonomists now consider emoryi to be a seperate species from guttatus, but I agree with you that they are all the same species.
