I really hate to do this, but any projections on the Spider market in the near future?

RyanT Dec 13, 2005 09:10 AM

It annoys me as much as most people when the whole "market" issue is brought up. But now that this new forum is here and I don't see the question asked anywhere yet, I might as well take advantage. At least it's in the right place.

I'm planning on picking up a male spider in about 2 months. I'm actually VERY happy that the market value on them is holding steady. But what will it be like in '06 and '07? It seems like spiders are the next logical step after pastels and we all know what happened with them. It's not really even a big deal. I won't mind if I spend 4 grand on an awesome animal this year and next year he's only worth half that or whatever. I'm not toally focused on the money aspect. He'll still be invaluable in creating some other great animals. I've got big plans for him. It's just a natural curiousity that runs through my head about what the general state of Spiders will be in the next few years. Will we see them going for as low as 1/4 of what they are now? Anyone pondered the same thing? What do you come up with?

As long as everyone and their mother are not trying to cut each others throat, and sell out, there is no reason that male spiders can't maintain a price in the 3K neighborhood, I think. Actually, there is no reason that a male spider should be below 5K. The crosses that they are capable of producing are endless. The combos have just begun, and will continue for many more years to come. The spider has to be one of the best "low" investment animals that you can purchase. I purchased mine this year, and is eating me out of house and home. No sperm plugs yet, but oh well....if nothing else, there is always next year.

Purchase a spider now before people realize that the $3,500 "sticker price" is a little low. Take advantage of it while you can.

I would think a lot has to do with any new morphs that come out. There's only a certain amount of disposable income out there, and even though a new morph might be more expensive, it might be worth it from both a investment and aesthetic point of view. BPs and snakes in general are no different from any other commodity. There will always be some bargains out there from someone who produced more than they expected, and then there's always the "trade" issue to move a small quantity. And quality animals from decent breeders will always do well.

If you are looking for a spider or whatever breed, why would you pay 5k to Joe from Jerk-Water junction when you can buy one for that price from one of the larger outfits and get the guarantees and comfort factor Joe can't provide?

Joe is FORCED to undercut to attract buyers, then Bill (a.k.a I never met or heard of the guy, he might be a crook) is forced to undercut Joe.

Its a vicious cycle...

True. Weird part is they both probably got their stock from a well-known breeder. All this being hypothetical, of course....

I am looking for cool snakes and great little projects to work on. I could give a turd less what the market is...the lower the price the better for me. I have a day job thank you.
