More on Chip's progress

PHRatz Dec 13, 2005 10:26 AM

He's eaten for me every day since Friday. Yesterday he ate in the morning, dog food again but then in the late afternoon I put him in the turtle proofed part of the house & let him walk around. In the utility room behind the door to the kitchen is an area where a turtle can't see us when they're out & about so I put strawberries on a plate in the floor behind that door. He didn't see me but I could see him eating them.

I wouldn't feed a normal adult every day but he's not normal yet so for now it's going to be daily feedings.
Finally he's finding something to eat other than dog food. That's a relief too.
He's also getting some exercise another good thing & tells me he must be feeling a lot better now.

A healthy adult doesn't need to eat daily if they're eating the right foods. When they eat too much they'll get fat which will cause heart, kidney, & other problems just like it will for any other species including us humans. I don't feed the other adults daily & in the summer they are outside enough that I don't even feed them every other day when they can pick off bugs themselves.

I have tried everything I can think of for Chip to eat, I started with live foods but he wouldn't bite. The only thing he was really interested in was the dog food...go figure! Now he'll eat some fruit but not much.
The dog food I bought was something I'd never seen before... my dog eats prescription diet so I don't look at dog food in the stores much. This stuff is Iam's Select that's in a pouch. It's not kibble, it's not canned but it's moist & looks like chunks of meat it was only 60 cents per pouch. Chip really likes it.
The vet said "good he's eating. Worry about getting him off dog food later just make sure that for now he eats."

So far he is keeping it up. His weight is back into the 390s, he's eating daily, today he ate less dog food & more berries. He's bathing every day, pooping & now walking around the turtle proofed part of the house & doing a pretty good job of that.
He's behaving almost like a normal turtle now, he just doesn't look like one... at least not on the plastron.
What a little fighter he is!

btw Janie is feeling much better too. I don't hear any odd breathing from her, she's eating a whole lot more food & behaving more like herself again.
I am so glad that I did not leave her outside after finding her sitting in the cold rain.
I think the vet was right, if I had I probably wouldn't be seeing her in the coming spring.
