Since when....

phiber_optikx Dec 13, 2005 02:00 PM

I was browsing through the adds and saw something that caught my eye.... Since when are Amels-$50, aners-$55, and normals-$45? Seems a little outrageous to me. But this brings up a question. Is it best to buy corns now at the end of the season or better to buy at the begining when the market is saturated?

That is a quandry that I've been mulling over... If I buy at the end of the season, it seems sometimes cheaper as it looks as if folks are practically desperate to unload 2005 babies.

However, I'm also buying those specimens that have been "left over" or "passed over". In other words its as if the really nice ones are now gone, and what's left are the "rejects".

I wanted to be "delicate" about this as I think that most snakes are absolutely beautiful creatures no matter what... but I think you get my meaning.

Actually, there are usually some pretty "finds" out there to be had this time of year, if one is willing to look for them diligently.

True, many of the 2005 babies left over are the B grade animals that were not selected by others, but there are those that are being offered because of a change in plans, and some of those animals can be had a terrific bargain.

Sometimes, because of family difficulties, having to move, or simple hard times, someone has to let go of their earlier acquisitions. Now, I'm not suggesting that we all look for ways to feed off of the misery of others, but I am saying that just because a snake is for sale in December, that does not mean that it is a plain jane looking for a charity home!

Sometimes, someone gets a pair of animals for an intended breeding project, and one of the pair dies. Living animals is a difficult "business" to be in, and there are always the unexpected DROs in the process. Now you have that perfect lavendar female, and no male to breed to her. Some folks will sell her this year, and hope to get a pair when the glut is on in the spring. She may not be dirt cheap, but I'll bet she's not B grade, either.

All in all, if someone is willing to sift through the crazy ads of everyone posting them to sell their "quadruple hets for normals!!!"...there are always diamonds to be found. You just have to really pay attention to the ads, and be ready to JUMP when that one snake is available...it won't last long, I can assure you!

I agree and you will note that I wanted to be VERY "delicate" about the matter as I know that there are those who frequent these forums that are, in fact, still selling their snakes. As we learned from the Disney movie "Aladdin", there are always those, "Diamonds in the rough" out there!
