new beardie........doesn't seem to be eating properly

spec May 18, 2003 05:51 PM

I got my first beardie a couple of weeks back and have been reading anything and everything I can online to figure out the best way to care for him. He's currently 9 - 10 weeks old and from tail to head about 6". The problem I'm experiencing is his eating habits. He eats erratically. One time he could eat 8 crickets the next time he doesn't seem to be interested at all. Also I've had very little success with him eating any kind of vegetables.
In the past week I moved him into a new setup that is 4'x2'x2'. Do you think that the new surroundings may be affecting him and if so, how long does it normally take for him to get aquired to the new setting?
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

They can be very different, but usually will settle in after about a week...... we always suggest that you take a fecal sample to you vet with a new beardie as just the change can cause stress that can cause minimal coccidia in them to increase and affect their eating and health.

If he is the age you state he was a good age to make a move with little adverse affect, but that is small for that age also, are you sure of his age?

he may be longer than that...maybe 8" I haven't taken an actual measurement of his length. Other than having the erratic eating habits he seems pretty healthy. He's very active and alert and his fecal matter appears to be fine. Only thing I was thinking was odd was the fact that he almost always defecates on his basking rock.
Im currently attempting to use a seperate tank for feeding. Will see if this has any effect.
