start by reading everythign you can get your hands on ...
. internet care sheets
. books
. articles/magazines

the normal rule of thumb is one square foot of enclosure for each linier foot of snake
. 4'x2' (lengthxwidth) is a good size for an adult male

i find BCI to be among some of the more clam/less agressive snakes around. there are always exceptions though. if you get it as a baby then chances are that with proper care and interaction you will end up with a calm handelable adult.

I think male colombian boas are about the most perfect large pet snake. Not to large when grown ( 6 to 7 ft.) and if raised from a juvenile and handled often are usually docile.
A boa will grow out of a 20 gallon tank at around a year to 18 months depending how it's fed.
If a docile boa is what you what I would recommend handling the snake before you purchase it. If there's some reptile shows in your area, thats a good place to see and handle them.
Good luck and I hope you find a good one.

does color matter with them?like if i get a dark one will it be dark and ugly or could it be dark and pretty?or is it more a personal preferance?

With reptiles color is important. But it's also personel preference. I might enjoy something that's not pleasing to you. It's all what you like. I happen to like most, if not all boas. I would not be to concerned with color as with getting a nice pet. Go look at some babies and handle them. You will know if it's one that you are attracted too. If at all possible take a look at the parents. This should give you an idea of what the snake will look like as an adult.
Good luck
