Changing over to prekilled/frozen thawed

jon78 Dec 13, 2005 07:04 PM

I have a 05 male that will only accept live prey, ive tried fresh killed, thawed offered on a hemostat and i get a frighten defensive reaction not as dramatic as striking more like hissing and avoiding, after a few minutes in give up in a effort not to stress him out. ive also tried offering prekilled immediately after he has put down a live meal in which i got the same response. ive tried the dead mouse in front of the hide spot over night which didnt work either..what else? is there any other tricks to convert to prekilled? i really dont like to feed anything live for the snakes safety and ofcourse my convience because everything else i keep readily accepts frozen. Any ideas?

Try a rat pup. You may breeze thru the transition in one trial.

You can also try scenting with chicken broth, chick down, cutting the scull open, and wiping fecies on them. Bloods love stinky food. The better it smells to them and the closer you are to the correct temp will help alot. Also if it doesnt take it in a few minutes remove the prey and then try again in a few minutes. Even some of mine that have been eating f/t for awhile wont nab it on the first go around. Waiting awhile to feed it will also help. If you continuously offer food to an animal its not going to feel the need to eat and will thus be more picky about the prey it takes. Hope this helps.
