Breeding JCPs

Coach Dec 13, 2005 08:55 PM

I have 1:2 JCPs and would like to breed them. The male is 4' and the females are both 6'. During most of the year I keep the the room at about 84 with a temp gradient up in the low 90's. I 've dropped the heat in the room to 78 during the day and have a temp gradient in their cage to 88. At night I let the temp drop to 72. The animals are all still feeding as normal. I've introduced the male to the females and he has shown no interest. I've now separated them . Am I too early ? Are the temps OK ? Any advice would be appreciated.

He might be a bit young, yet. 4' is a little small, and it may just not be his year, yet. Then again, a couple months of feeding and growing might do it. If not, there's always next year.

Whether or not your male is ready at 4 feet is up to him, but I have repeatedly bred males in the 4 foot range with great success.
Your temps sound fine, just keep at it. Put them together for about 3 days, then seperate them for about 3 days. Do this several times, and it will probably get things going.
If that fails you can try placing another male's shed in the cage, or you can try scratching him on the dorsal and lateral surfaces near his vent (males do this to eat other with their spurs when they combat sometimes).
Then again, maybe love just isn't in the air yet for them, but it sounds like you are doing everything "right".
Good luck- feel free to drop me an email if you have any other questions.
