cross breeding corn king =jungle corn

I was curious how you all feel about cross breeding corns and kings?

Corns are amazing animals with a ton of beautiful natural variants and so are kings why would you need to cross them?? Just to see if you can?? You can. I just don't get it. With all the different snakes in the world how do so many get bored with what is naturally there?? You asked for a opinion so there is one and I am sure you will get more.

Not trying to be mean or a smart Asp, but my honest opinion on crossing a king with a corn? I despise the thought. Especially when one can purchase pure cornsnakes that come in every color under the rainbow. Or Thayeri kings that are so bright and beautiful they just about glow in the dark. No thanks. Hybrids are not my cup of tea.

"I was expecting this type of response"

Not to worry. This response is mostly from this forum and a few individuals. There are far more people interested in hybrids than people who want the same old same old. Unfortunatly from the brow beating of these individuals most herpers who breed hybrids choose to remain silent. The others who post negative hateful post will eventually (to their own embarassment) become closet hybridizers.

I breed hybrids and pure species. The hybrids sell the faster and bring more coin. Also if you go to a large show like the Daytona Expo you will see people fighting over new hybrid crosses.

Rainer, my post may have been negitive on hybrids, but in no way was it hateful. Don't confuse me with Keith & yourself going toe to toe over this topic. This particular poster asked what our opinion was on crossing a corn with a king. I gave an honest answer. I don't call people names, I don't stomp my feet. Though I did spill my coke on my lap when he said said king/corn cross. I have zero interest in hybrids. My taste is with pure corns, kings, rats, etc. What should I have said? "Hey Chuck, skip the king and throw in a hognose"? Nothing personal, but I just have a hard time understanding what the appeal is when there are a million corn morphs and colors out there. If I'm a purist, then I guess I'm guilty as charged. Should I have to apologize for this? Look on the bright side. I'm not a total hardcore purist. I do like some color morphs, to include one of your Axanthic Brooks I purchased from Brandon.

Thanks for the kind words on my okeetee. Just curious why you posted this question on the kingsnake forum and cornsnake fourm if you were kind of expecting a certain response? What kind of response would I get if I went to the hybrid forum and asked what everone thought, if I were to breed a Dare county Eastern King with another Dare county Eastern King? They'd kick my tail out of there, that's what they'd do, LOL Just food for thought.

I was just curous as to what people in the king forum thought compared to those in the corn forum. I love all snakes, and was just curious what others thought. Nothing more. I was not trying to stir things up. Thanks for the responses, though. I wanted honest answers and thats what I got.

Personally I do not like hybrids. But here on the kingsnake forum people seem to like king x king crosses (intergrades?) quite a bit but not king x other species. *shrug* Go figure? They are all mutts to me.

So in a nutshell, if its corn x king its not welcome on this forum but if its Florida king x albino cal king x eastern king then its fine. LOL. Ken

Oh thats a nice corn. What type of cage is that as its nice also ?

>>I was curious how you all feel about cross breeding corns and kings?

I think that while both sides of the "x" are beautiful animals, if there is responsibility in such breeding (record keeping, not passing off a mix as a purebred of one kind or the other, etc.), why not? There are crossbred dogs, cats, etc. and no one really complains about them... some even become their own "breed" (cockapoos for instance). I know that with snakes, we're a LONG way from that kind of thing, but is it really that different? These are "pets" and not something that should be returned to the wild or made "just to be made" (ie, Tigons or Ligers). If every "pet" species we've ever known were bred true, then there'd be very different animals in place of our favorite dogs, cats and fish in our homes.

Again, I stress that there should be RESPONSIBILITY in these endeavors... if not, then it shouldn't be done at all.

Also, this is my opinion... which was asked for.

A very beautiful snake. Do you hold em all the time while feeding or was it just for the picture?

JETZEN Dec 14, 2005 06:49 AM

For the pic,and i like to have them occupied.

I like Hybrids as much as I like pure snakes. However the best advice I can give you is keep your Corn and King just the way they are and buy yourself some second or third generation Hybrids instead. Those Hybrids are in many cases much easier to identify and simply much prettier snakes than a first generation. The work has already been done and the results you will get will probably make you much happier in the long run. The first generation offspring are often very hard to identify which pisses people off. Misrepresentation is something that is scowled upon. So be patient and find yourself a pair of off the wall looking snakes and make yourself some crazier looking ones, which is probably what you were shooting for in the first place. Tom Stevens

Thanks for the advice. I already have two jungle corns (not sure of generation), but they are pretty snakes and I will be breeding these two together when they are old enough.
