maritime/eastern difference

i live in northeast masachusetts and according to most snake range maps easterns and maritimes live here. but what is the difference? can i like count the scales or something? or like headplates? and if they both live here wouldnt there be a good chance they have all interbred and are a mix of both subspecies?

I believe it has to do more with coloration, not sure though I think maritime garters have more green and red, hopefully someone will know the difference for sure
