Knoxville (AP): The University of Tennessee veterinary medicine school and the Knoxville zoo are working together to make sure eight tiny Eastern box turtles thrive.
The turtles were hatched from eggs removed from adult females that had been struck by cars in separate incidents.
Six eggs were removed from a turtle that had to be destroyed in June. Two others were taken from an adult that died overnight after being struck in traffic in mid-July.
A snapping turtle that was struck in early June. Some of its eggs were infertile, but eight of them hatched. The adult recovered and was released in Blount County. Its offspring were released later in the same area.
The little box turtles will winter at the zoo, not on display. They will be released in the spring.
UT vet school officials say 31 injured or sick turtles were brought to the school in June and July.
Veterinarians say most were hit by cars after being attracted to the pavement by its warmth.
