drunk_on_chivas Dec 14, 2005 03:46 AM

To all boiga keepers out there...
i'm looking for some inspiration to redecorate my boiga enclosures...i don't know bout the rest of y'all but my boigas don't seem to like perching on branches....they'd rather curl up on the floor or underneath newspaper...much to my dismay..sigh..any suggestions?
pls post some pictures

1.1 b.nigriceps
1.1 b.cynodon
0.1 b.dendrophila

I have 16 species of the boiga genus rigth now, and they all allmost never lie on the bottom. If you ask me it´s just about having your terrarium warmed up the right way.
Many boiga´s dont like to hang in a branch, but lie on it.Offcourse branches of this size are hard to use in a terrarium.
I solve this problem by making plateaus.
By having this plateaus at different levels in a high terrarium the animals can choose the temperature they prefer.
If I see a boiga laying on the bottom I know it will shed his skin soon (more moist on the bottom), or it´s unhealthy.
I use real plants in all my boiga enclosures including an enclosure containing a 2,5 meters female boiga cynodon.Using the right strong plants (for example ficus species) and letting branches go trough this plants works very well here.

I´m sorry, I said species, But I meant specimens.
I wish I had 16 species.

I use Vision Cages (Models 222, 322, 433)for my Boigas. I feel the added security of only one viewable area gives them less things to stress about. Most of the time they stay up on the bamboo pieces I have set up as perches hidden behinded fake foliage. I do have cork bark curls on the bottom of the cages they will sometimes go under when they are opaque. I use keeper's choice shredded cypress mulch as a substrate.
I heat with flexwatt tape along the bottom and of the side of the cages hooked up to a helix (set to 86 night drop of 78-80).
My snake room is usually around 80 degrees most of the time.
Each cage has a full spectrum light on a timer. The lights are one about 8 hours day.

How do you have the cage heated? Yours might be staying on the floor because they are curling up on the heat source. They also might be hiding under the newspaper because they are stressed.

In my experience Boigas do much better in Vision style cages or Neodesha cages (if you can get them) especially if your are dealing with nervous ill-tempered imports.

I build cages for boigas myself from glass and I fix with aquarium / terrarium silicone. The ground material in the cage is peat. Especially that is very great for Boiga cynodon, keeps humidity very well.

I keep:
B.ceylonensis (surrounding of Colombo, Sri Lanka)
B.flavescens (Sulawesi)
B.guanxiensis (Guang Tri, Central Vietnam)
B.cynodon (Java)
