Problem: hypo king

KingOz Jul 23, 2003 08:45 PM

I have a 7 mt old female hypo brooks kingsnake. I got her from a reptile show a few mts ago, she was 3 mts old then. Since I had her, her poops have been unformed, and thick puddle like. I thought it was a result from stress. Aside form that she eats twice a week (4 to 5 pinks per feeding), and her tank is kept in the 80s with a few degree drop at night. By now I'm sure she is used to her new tank, so the reason why her poops are loose is bothering me. I am planing on takeing a sample to a vet, but do you have any ideas as to cause? Should I use a vitamin supplement with her? There is so much conflicting info out there about vitamin supplements I am not sure if I should use them or not. (she is kept on newspaper, with lots of hides)

Thank You,

You might try switching to fuzzies or even something a little bigger. Mice when they are 4-5 days old have the highest fat content of their lives and a belly full of milk. And we all know what greasy food and milk does to our stools. Another (somewhat cruel) thought is to starve the pinks for a day before offering them.

No vitamin supplements needed. Just increase the size of mice to hoppers . They have more calcium and nutritional content. Seven months is way to long for feeding pinks. I have seen some snakes that were that age that never snaped out of the growth stunt and malnutrition. Get some larger mice into the snake asap.
If you still get runny stools after 4-5 feedings then you might have a problem with parasites but snakes usually regurge if that was the case. If the loose stools continue after feeding hoppers then take it to the vet.

She is too small to take hoppers....will fuzzies help for a start? Or should I get hoppers and break them in half until she is large enough to eat them. She sheds about every 3 weeks, so I hope she will not be stunted.

Then get her on the largest fuzzies (more calcium ect) she can eat. No need to break hoppers in half. You must be using frozen ...I hope. LOL!
