Seems to be a common theme---Dumeril's feeding question

Jabbano Dec 14, 2005 10:00 AM

I've had the most wonderful, gentle, docile, Dumeril's Boa since July. I've been feeding her frozen thawed large mice every 10 days or so with no problem. But for the past month or so she has refused feeding, four mice in total. I know Dumerils are prone to fasting but at what point should I be concerned, and perhaps try a fresh killed mouse instead of the defrosted ones?

If you've changed anything, I'd go back to what was working. If you haven't changed anything, I'd make sure the time of year hasn't played a factor in your set up...rheostat not adjusted to compensate for cooler room temps???? If all things are as they were, I would keep offering what you know she likes at regular intervals, and keep a close eye on her. If she's healthy and simply choosing not to feed at this time, she shouldn't lose substantial weight and should stay looking outwardly healthy. Seems like you already know the key part of some Dumerils, lol, Patience! Hopefully it's just a short term fasting, and next time around she'll feed again. Wish ya luck, take care!

My Dumerils continued to refuse feeding until last night, when I tried the dependable old "snake in a shoe box with the mouse overnight" method. When I opened the box in the morning, she struck at me for the first time ever; the box method must be really effective at stimulating a feeding response.

Thanks again to everyone in the forum.
