Another Whites question

sugarfox03 Dec 14, 2005 11:41 AM

Ok. My Whites Tree Frog is doing great! He ate 4 superworms 2 nights ago, how often should I feed him, and how many is normal? I took him out of his tank and fed him in a rubbermaid container. He ate 4 of the 6 supers I put in there for him. How often should he ate, and what amount is normal per feeding? Thanks again for all the great info about my set up!

Melody

PS. I need a name for this guy...any suggestions? Anything but Kermit.

I used to feed my White's several superworms or crickets a week.

Then I looked at photos of White's in the wild in Australia.

My frog was fat compared to its wild cousins. (see photo of him below).

I've decided to feed it maybe two superworms or 3 crickets a week until he slims down a little.

They have huge appetites, but like many wild animals they eat what they see because the food may run out tomorrow. And a frog in captivity doesn't have to evade predators or even move around much.

So what I'm saying is: decide on a level of fitness for your frog and then feed whatever maintains that. Some frogs are naturally larger than others, and of course you don't want to underfeed a growing frog. I think many keepers overfeed their animals (of any species) to the detriment of the pet.

I feed my two WTF's like every 3-4 days throwing in 10-15 crickets. I sometimes mix it up with earthworms, slugs and wax worms as treats. I dust the crickets once like every 4 feedings. And sometimes even feed them small pinkies. But depending on the size of the frog you can feed every other day to every third or fourth day. Mine are plump but not fat so I feed them every 3-4 days.
